The Observatory Science Centre (OSC) is unique amongst science centres due to the link with astronomy. It is a busy tourist attraction set amid the beautiful Sussex countryside within the former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory.
OSC opened in 1995 and is part of Science Projects Ltd, a registered non-profit charity dedicated to the promotion of science to everyone.
OSC attracts a wide visitor base of all ages, abilities & interests including general public, school groups, birthday parties, uniformed groups, astronomy societies etc. We have a Ceremony licence and our own comprehensive events programme.
A Gap Year is typically a year-long break before / after college or university, but can equally be taken at any time in life...
It is an opportunity to gain skills and experiences, whilst reflecting and focussing on what you want to do next...
Perhaps you are entering / leaving a science field, considering teaching as a career, looking to enhance your CV by working in the charity sector or just wondering which direction to follow with your education or career?
We would love to hear from you if you are self motivated and enthusiastic with a passion for working with people of all ages and abilities.
We gave a Gap Year opportunity to Alice in 2021 / 2022 and she wanted to tell you how this worked for her:
“I honestly couldn’t recommend this job enough as an excellent opportunity for someone on a gap year.
Not only have I developed substantial knowledge in a scientific field that I never would have touched otherwise, but I have also had the opportunity to develop skills that will support me significantly in my studies at university including presenting in front of groups, general people skills and even modelling in local magazines (although I can’t imagine that specifically will be too useful in my biomedical sciences degree… but who knows?!).
This supportive environment has not only encouraged me to develop in ways I didn’t even think possible, when in the workplace, but also their flexibility has meant that I’ve also developed while on my month’s worth of travelling that was permitted during my contract.
One of the most important things to me though was to have fun on my gap year and this job has delivered on that front too!”
At present there are no staff vacancies at The Centre.
The situation is not expected to change in the near future, but when we do recruit we normally advertise on this web site and our own social media.
You are welcome to send your CV at anytime to Mrs J Harris which can be kept on file for six months. If any vacancies arise we would endeavour to email you and ask you to complete an application form if you wished to be considered for the role.
