The Observatory Science Centre is part of the educational charity Science Projects Ltd: dedicated to the promotion of Science for All. Your purchase helps to support us as we strive to maintain and develop this unique attraction in a Grade II* Listed site.
Led by a knowledgeable guide you will have a private tour of the telescope domes, including those not normally open to visitors during daytime.
This tour will include the exhibition 'Domes of Discovery- the Story of The Royal Observatory' which brings to life the 300 year history of one of the most famous scientific institutions in the world.
There is NO viewing through the historic telescopes during the daytime, however
if the sun is shining we will be able to operate a solar telescope.
Led by a knowledgeable guide you will enjoy a private tour of the site, hearing about the former days of The Royal Observatory at the Herstmonceux Estate.
Your tour will include the exhibition ‘Domes of Discovery - the story of The Royal Observatory’ which brings to life the 300-year history of one of the most famous scientific institutions in the world.
You will also see some of the sites archive material.
You will have private access to interactive science exhibits with assistance from the science centre team.
You will enjoy a science demonstration / science show chosen from your preferred theme. Perhaps someone in your party will enjoy the opportunity to be shown how to demonstrate an experiment to the audience?
Access to outdoor exhibits will be subject to weather conditions.
Led by a knowledgeable guide you will enjoy a private tour of the telescope domes, including those not normally open to visitors. This is a relaxed, informal evening with plenty of opportunity for you to ask astronomy questions.
Viewing through an historic telescope will take place – weather permitting.
You will have a planetarium style presentation in the absence of actual night sky observing due to inclement weather.

Each private visit will be a bespoke experience.These times are purely an indication as we will discuss all options to meet your requirements.

For evening astronomy experiences the arrival / departure times will be discussed depending on your catering requirements and sunset etc.

For the safety of our own team we insist that members of the group do not attend if they have any symptoms of COVID-19.
You will be assisted by our friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable employees and volunteers.
All have a Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Certificate and many are registered STEM Ambassadors.
There is free parking for cars immediately in front of the entrance reception.

After dark everyone must pay particular attention to where they are walking and ensure children are constantly supervised. Risk Assessments are available.
We recommend everyone wears clothing / footwear appropriate to the weather conditions. The temperature can drop rapidly at night and there is no heating in the telescope domes. Remember you will be going outside!
Torches are not essential but you are welcome to bring your own... especially for the walk to / from your vehicle. White light torches should not be used in the domes when viewing. Red light torch is preferable for astronomy purposes.
The visit will proceed regardless of weather conditions and viewing through an historic telescope cannot be guaranteed. The telescopes cannot see through cloud, nor can they be set up quickly if there is a brief gap in the clouds.
Viewing through an historic telescope will take place (weather / light permitting) and in the absence of fair weather you will have a planetarium style presentation.
Your private visit will take place in-line with the latest Government guidelines.
The Observatory Science Centre is an historic site and visitors must take care at all times.
Children must be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times. Children / carers are included in the group maximum of 20.
Strictly non-smoking site including E-cigarette / vaping etc.
CCTV is operating throughout the site.
