(Links across the top: Shows for schools scienceworks community outreach stardome)
To offer an outreach programme has been our aim in recent years whilst the centre has expanded and become established. When the time was right, a prerequisite was to have a small van to enable us to travel into the community. The purchase of a vehicle in 2005 was made possible with thanks to all of our visitors who contributed through the GiftAid scheme and to Willmoth’s Citroen in Eastbourne who supported us and agreed to our purchase of a van at cost price.
We are now able to take science shows and exhibits out to the community and directly into schools. This is an invaluable development for schools that face difficulties in taking pupils out of school and also for school seeking a focus for their science week etc.
Jane Ballamy has joined our team and has spent many years teaching and
performing around the country. She is now looking forward to bringing fun
science into schools.
Everybody loves bubbles but who knows how and why bubbles form? The very popular bubble show not only gives the kids a chance to see some of the biggest bubbles in the world it also introduces them to basic scientific principles. Topics covered include molecules and atoms, the colour of light and some of the fundamental laws of physics that govern the whole universe! Audience participation is the key here and the show climaxes with a chance to actually be put inside a bubble!
The show can be aimed at KS1 or KS2. It lasts approximately 45 mins and can be show to audiences of up to 90 children.

Our brand new Space outreach is an exploration of our Solar System and beyond. The programme covers how rockets have put people in space, how they survive when up there and how the treacherous route back to Earth is achieved.
After a brief introduction to the universe and everything in it the following topics will be covered:
- Rockets
- Living in space
- Coming home
The show is suitable for KS2 and KS3. It lasts for 60 mins and can be shown to audiences of 60 children (this number can vary with the number of teaching staff available to assist with construction of the straw rockets)

Lights, camera, action! is an interactive show all about light. The show will cover where light comes from, what light is and you will see some of the amazing things that light can do!
The show introduces some challenging science such as refraction and reflection, what a photon of light is and how do dead bodies produce light! These topics are tackled with pupil interaction and visual props to aid understanding.
The show is suitable for KS1 and KS2, the content may vary slightly for different year groups; so open your eyes and discovery the grizzly truth behind light!
Music to your Ears explains the science behind the racket that kids can make! Take an interactive journey into the ear and find out where sound begins, how it travels and how it gets inside your brain!
Then it's time to make some noise! Find out your favourite body noise, feel where your voice comes from, it's all music to the ears! Get a chance to use and make your own bizarre musical instruments out of things that you can find in your own home. Finally become part of the Plumbers Orchestra and play some truly weird instruments that really make music.
The show is suitable for KS1 and KS2 (the scientific detail will vary slightly). It lasts for approximately 50 mins and can be delivered to audiences of up to 90 children.
Not in my kitchen! show's that you don't need a laboratory to be a scientist. A wide range of experiments cover topics including air pressure, density, inertia, friction, combustion and immiscible liquids. These are presented using materials you can find in most kitchens giving children the opportunity to practice the science for themselves.
The show is suitable for KS1 and KS2 (the scientific detail will vary slightly). It lasts for approximately 60 mins and can be shown to audiences of 90 children.
This show explores the science behind waves using surfing, music and Mexican waves to aid in the scientific explanations! Basic wave motion and how wave energy is carried are just some of the topics covered in this highly interactive and informative demonstration. Children will be introduced to basic wave principles with the use of the latest equipment from SETPOINT* as well as taking part in The Plumbers Orchestra. This is an excellent introduction to some quite complex scientific principles and is suitable for older KS2 children and KS3. The show lasts 60 mins and can be delivered to audiences of up to 90 children. (*This equipment is subject to availability but the show can be performed without it)
These are under development. Initially we aim to support the science shows with workshops, resource material etc.
