9th August - Perseids Shooting Star Evening

Our themed evenings are based around meteor showers which  are produced as the Earth passes through the dust trails left behind by comets.  Meteors, also known as shooting stars, are produced by tiny specks of dust that burn up as they enter the Earth’s atmosphere.  The evenings aim to be both informal and informative.  They include a guest speaker and an opportunity to look though the Centre’s historic telescopes (weather permitting).

If the weather is unsuitable on themed evenings,  the talk will go ahead regardless and a comprehensive tour of the telescopes will replace viewing.  Members of a local astronomical society are also on-site to help answer any questions you may have.

Numbers are limited to 80 people, so book early to secure your place.

The Perseids meteor shower occurs as Earth passes through the  outskirts of a cloud of debris from comet Swift-Tuttle.  Approximately  60 shooting stars per hour can be seen during  this shower.

Join us for a cheese and wine evening before trying to spot some meteors.
