Anamorphs

Draw on a board and observe the reflection using the curved mirror which distorts the image. Pieces are provided which appear as geometric shapes in the mirror. There is also an extremely distorted image which can only be viewed using a small cylindrical mirror.

Bendy Mirrors

Two large mirrors are held in a frame. Both are convex but one is curved horizontally  and the other vertically. The images viewed are distorted in height and width.

Frozen Shadows

Bright light is projected onto a photo-luminescent screen which glows for a while. By placing an object like a hand in front of the light, it will cast a shadow that will remain frozen for a time afterwards.

Laser Amazer

A pair of lasers produce beams of light which travel inside a box with a transparant top.  By turning some mirrors the beams reflect onto a number of lenses and other mirrors.

Light Table

Coloured plastic filter pieces can be placed on a light table to show the effect of subtracting colours from white light.

Mirror Drawing

Try to trace the lines of shapes – a screen over the top of the shapes hides them from view so they can only be seen in a mirror.

Mirror Maze

Multiple reflections can be observed by arranging small mirrors on a larger one.  By fitting mirrors at angles into a partitioned box, an image can be seen at one corner by peering through a window in the opposite corner.

Mixing Coloured Light

Three lamps project spots of light using the primary colours; red, blue and yellow, onto a screen and overlapping them produces the secondary colours, or white. An object placed in front of the lamps produces coloured shadows.

Model Eye

Large eye models can be dismantled into five parts and reassembled again. There is also a colour blindness test, and spectacles to view a picture in 3D.

Optical Fibres

A bundle of optical fibres can be pointed at a lamp, causing light to travel along the fibres and emerge at the other end. Transparant or opaque coloured sheets can be placed in front of the light to investigate transmission and reflection.

Pinhole Camera

At the front of each of three ‘cameras’ is a hole; small, larger and much larger with a lens. These can be pointed at a bright object or a light. The inner tube can be moved to focus the inverted image on the small screen inside.

Zoetrope

A cylindrical drum with slots around it sits on a bearing. There is a series of images on the inside of the drum. When looking through the slots as the drum is rotated, the images appear to move.
